Which Scottish school year is my child in?

Scotland doesn’t use England’s September cut-off — the school year is worked out from a child’s age at the last day of February. Enter a date of birth and we’ll tell you the current (or upcoming) year group from P1 to S6, the August they start P1, their age today, and the crucial deferral rules for younger children. We work out their year group from today’s date, so this is always current for the school year you’re in.

How Scotland decides

One intake a year, every August. A child starts P1 if they turn 5 between 1 March and the following last day of February — so a March birthday and the February birthday nearly a year later share a class. Full detail in the year-groups guide.
