Scottish School Year Groups and Ages: P1 to S6 Explained
Which age goes into which year in Scottish schools? P1 to S6 explained — with ages, CfE levels, and English year-group equivalents in one clear table.
Scotland uses a different year-group system from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Primary school runs P1 to P7 (seven years), and secondary runs S1 to S6 (six years) — thirteen years of compulsory and post-compulsory schooling in total.
Here's everything in one place.
The full year-group table

|---|---|---|---|---|

| P2 | 6–7 | First | Year 2 | |
| P3 | 7–8 | First | Year 3 | |
| P4 | 8–9 | Second | Year 4 | SNSA |
| P5 | 9–10 | Second | Year 5 | |
| P6 | 10–11 | Second | Year 6 | |
| P7 | 11–12 | Third | Year 6 / Year 7 | SNSA; P7–S1 transition |
| S1 | 11–12 | Third | Year 7 | Secondary starts |
| S2 | 12–13 | Third | Year 8 | SNSA |
| S3 | 13–14 | Fourth | Year 9 | End of Broad General Education |
| S4 | 14–15 | Senior Phase | Year 10 | National 5 exams |
| S5 | 15–16 | Senior Phase | Year 11 / Year 12 | Higher exams; school leaving age |
| S6 | 16–17 | Senior Phase | Year 13 | Advanced Highers / additional Highers |
Age ranges are typical: a child whose birthday falls after the August intake date will be a year older within the same year group. In a typical S4 class, pupils are a mix of 14- and 15-year-olds at the start of the year.
Primary school (P1–P7)
Primary school in Scotland lasts seven years, compared with six in England and Wales (Reception + Years 1–6). This is why Scotland's equivalents run one year "behind" England's from P1 onwards.
Starting school: the P1 entry date
Children start P1 in August — the beginning of the Scottish school year. To enter P1 in August 2026, a child must have turned five by 28 February 2026, or turn five during the 2026/27 school year.
Children born between 1 March and 28 February of the following year form a single intake cohort. This means a child born on 1 March 2021 and a child born on 28 February 2022 will be in the same P1 class starting August 2026 — up to 12 months' age difference within the same year group.
Free school meals: universal in P1–P5
All pupils in P1 to P5 receive free school meals automatically — no application needed. From P6 onwards, free meals are means-tested (eligibility is tied to qualifying benefits). See our free school meals guide for details.
School clothing grant: P1 onwards
Council clothing grants are available from P1. Most councils pay a minimum of £150 per child per year for primary pupils. See the school clothing grant guide for your council's amount.
Secondary school (S1–S6)
Secondary school runs six years, split into two distinct phases.
Broad General Education: S1–S3
The first three years of secondary (S1–S3) are the Broad General Education (BGE) phase under Curriculum for Excellence. Pupils study a wide range of subjects without being locked into exam tracks. National Standardised Assessments happen in S2.
At the end of S3, pupils (usually age 13–14) choose which subjects to take through to National 5 in S4.
Senior Phase: S4–S6
S4 — pupils sit National 5 exams (broadly equivalent to GCSEs but taken one year earlier). Most take five or six subjects, though some take more or fewer.
S5 — most pupils sit Higher exams. Highers are one-year qualifications and are the main currency for Scottish university entry. Pupils typically take four or five Highers in S5.
S6 — pupils can take Advanced Highers, additional Highers, or a mix. Advanced Highers are the closest Scottish equivalent to A-Levels and are well-regarded by universities for competitive courses.
The Scottish system vs England: key differences
| Feature | Scotland | England |
|---|---|---|
| Primary years | 7 (P1–P7) | 7 (Reception + Y1–Y6) |
| Secondary years | 6 (S1–S6) | 7 (Y7–Y13) |
| First major exams | S4, age 15–16 (National 5) | Y11, age 15–16 (GCSEs) |
| Pre-university exams | S5/S6, one-year Highers | Y12/Y13, two-year A-Levels |
| Typical graduation age | 17 (S6) | 18 (Y13) |
| University entry | Typically 17, one year earlier than England | Typically 18 |

Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) levels
Scotland's curriculum is organised into levels that map loosely (but not exactly) onto year groups:
| CfE Level | Typical year groups | Rough age |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Nursery–P1 | 3–6 |
| First | P2–P4 | 6–9 |
| Second | P5–P7 | 9–12 |
| Third | S1–S2 | 12–14 |
| Fourth | S3 | 13–15 |
| Senior Phase | S4–S6 | 14–18 |
These are intended ranges, not rigid divisions. Schools have flexibility and some pupils will be working at a level above or below their year group — particularly in literacy and numeracy.

Frequently asked questions
Children start P1 in the August after their fifth birthday. A child born between 1 March and 28 February of the following year is eligible for the intake that August. Children turning five between 1 March and 28 February who haven't yet turned five by the August start date may defer for a year — see our P1 deferral guide.
S1 pupils are typically 11–12 years old. They transfer from P7 in the August after completing their seventh year of primary school.
Year 9 (England/Wales) is broadly equivalent to S2 in Scotland. Both are the second year of secondary school, though the curriculum content differs significantly.
The minimum school leaving age in Scotland is 16. Most pupils in S4 (aged 15–16) complete their National 5 exams before deciding whether to stay on for S5 and S6. The majority who want to go to university stay until S6.
Scottish secondary school runs from S1 to S6 — six years in total. The first three years (S1–S3) are the Broad General Education phase; S4–S6 is the Senior Phase, covering National 5s, Highers and Advanced Highers.
No. The Scottish equivalent of Year 13 is S6. Unlike in England where A-Levels are studied over two years in Year 12 and Year 13, Scottish Highers are completed in one year (usually S5 or S6). S6 pupils can take Advanced Highers or additional Highers rather than a separate two-year qualification.
