School Holidays 2026/27
The September Weekend 2026: every council's dates
16 of Scotland's 32 councils take a September weekend in 2026/27, and 8 of them — East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire — take it from Fri 25 Sept to Mon 28 Sept. The rest are spread from 7 September 2026 to 25 September 2026, 3 of them as a single Monday rather than a long weekend, and 16 councils don't take one at all. It is the Scottish school holiday most likely to catch out a family new to an area: it doesn't exist in England, it doesn't exist in every council, and neighbouring councils take it on different dates.

Grouped by region. “Pupils back” is the first school day after the break; where a council pins an in-service day to it, that is the date shown. Each council name links to the full 2026/27 calendar.

The 16 councils with no September weekend
These councils' 2026/27 calendars carry no September break. Their autumn holiday is the October week, and in most of them the first day off after the August return is a September or October in-service day — listed on each council page.
A long weekend in the west, a single Monday in the east
The name on the calendar tells you the shape. 13 councils publish a “September Weekend” — Friday and Monday off, four days away from school — and they cluster around Glasgow and down the Clyde. 3 councils publish a “September Holiday” instead: one Monday, no Friday — Falkirk on Mon 7 Sept, Edinburgh on Mon 14 Sept and West Lothian on Mon 21 Sept. A family that moves from one to the other and assumes the Friday is off has an unexplained absence on its record.
The dates cluster too, but not on one weekend — 6 distinct start dates in 2026: Mon 7 Sept for Falkirk; Fri 11 Sept for East Lothian and Midlothian; Mon 14 Sept for Edinburgh; Fri 18 Sept for Aberdeen, East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire; Mon 21 Sept for West Lothian and Fri 25 Sept for East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire. A grandparent in one council can be off while the children in the next are at school.
September weekend 2027: what councils have published for 2027/28
13 councils have a September weekend in their 2027/28 calendar so far, 12 of them read off the council's own published dates. Aberdeen, East Lothian and South Ayrshire take one in 2026/27 but have not yet published 2027/28 — expect a row here once they do.

Where the September weekend comes from
It predates the school calendar. Scottish burghs each set their own local holidays — the trades weeks when a town's works closed together, of which the Glasgow Fair is the best-known survivor, and in the west an autumn holiday in late September. School calendars grew up around those shutdowns, and although the industries have gone the councils still set their own term dates, so the pattern is still legible in the tables above: the Clyde councils keep a long weekend, Edinburgh keeps a Monday, and half the country has no September break in its calendar at all.
That is why it resists standardisation in a way the October week does not. Every council takes an October break within a fortnight of each other; the September weekend is present in half of them and absent in the rest. The guide to why Scottish term dates differ covers the rest of the calendar.
Frequently asked questions
When is the September weekend in Scotland in 2026?
It depends on the council. 8 of the 16 councils that take one — East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire — are off from Fri 25 Sept to Mon 28 Sept. Across all councils the dates run from 7 September 2026 to 25 September 2026 2026, and 16 councils do not take a September weekend at all.
Which Scottish councils have a September weekend?
16 of the 32 councils in 2026/27: Aberdeen, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Lothian, East Renfrewshire, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Glasgow, Inverclyde, Midlothian, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire and West Lothian. The 16 that do not are Aberdeenshire, Angus, Argyll and Bute, Clackmannanshire, Western Isles, Dumfries and Galloway, Dundee, Fife, Highland, Moray, North Ayrshire, Orkney Islands, Perth and Kinross, Scottish Borders, Shetland Islands and Stirling.
Is the September weekend a whole long weekend or just the Monday?
Both exist, and the name is the clue. 13 councils take a Friday-to-Monday "September Weekend" — two school days off. 3 councils take a single Monday and call it the "September Holiday": Falkirk (Mon 7 Sept), Edinburgh (Mon 14 Sept) and West Lothian (Mon 21 Sept). Check the shape column before assuming you have the Friday off.
Why do some councils have a September weekend and others not?
It grew out of the local trades and autumn holidays that each burgh set for itself before there was a national school calendar — Glasgow and the shipbuilding towns kept an autumn break, the north and the islands mostly did not. Councils still set their own term dates, so the pattern survived: a Central Belt council is likely to have one, a Highland or island council is not, and neighbouring councils can differ.
Does the September weekend fall on the same dates in 2027/28?
Not for every council, and not every council has published yet. 12 of the 13 2027/28 rows on this page are read off the council's own published calendar; 3 councils that take a September weekend in 2026/27 have not yet published 2027/28. The 2027/28 table on this page is updated as councils publish.
