School Holidays 2026/27

Scotland vs England, Wales & NI: School Holidays Compared

The Scottish school year runs on a different clock: back in mid-August, off for summer from late June — two to three weeks ahead of England at both ends. Here's every difference that matters, with the Scottish dates computed from all 32 councils' confirmed 2026/27 calendars.

England and Wales have no national term calendar — every local authority and academy trust sets its own dates, so the right-hand column describes the typical pattern, not a fixed date. For a specific English school, use the gov.uk term-dates lookup. Scottish dates on this page are computed from the same council-confirmed data behind our 32 council calendars.

What the offset means in practice

Early-July holidays are Scotland's window

Scottish families can travel from the start of July, before schools in England and Wales break up — the fortnight when flights and accommodation are still priced for term time in most of the UK. The trade-off comes in late August, when Scotland is back at school while England's peak pricing rolls on.

Cross-border families juggle two calendars

With the summers overlapping for only a couple of weeks in mid-July to mid-August, families split across the border get a narrow shared window — worth planning around early. The October and February breaks align far better.

In-service days are the hidden difference

Scottish councils schedule in-service days through the year, often attached to breaks — and they differ by council. They have no direct English equivalent (INSET days exist but follow each school's own calendar). Every council page lists them.

Frequently asked questions

When do schools go back in Scotland compared to England?

Scottish schools return in mid-August — between 12 August 2026 and 20 August 2026 depending on the council — while schools in England and Wales go back in early September. That means Scottish pupils are typically back at their desks two to three weeks before English pupils.

When do schools break up for summer in Scotland vs England?

Scottish schools break up between 25 June 2027 and 5 July 2027 — late June to early July. Most schools in England and Wales continue into mid-to-late July. So Scotland starts summer around three to four weeks earlier, and finishes it earlier too.

When do schools start back in England?

Early September, for most schools in England and Wales — but there is no national date. Each local authority and academy trust sets its own calendar, so two neighbouring schools can differ. The definitive source for any specific English school is the gov.uk term-dates lookup or the school itself.

Is half term the same in Scotland and England?

Roughly, but not exactly. Scotland’s "October week" broadly aligns with England’s October half-term, and Scotland’s February mid-term sits close to England’s February half-term — though the Scottish version is a shorter break in many councils. England and Wales also take a late-May half-term week; Scotland generally doesn’t, taking local May holidays instead.

Why do Scottish schools finish earlier in summer?

The school year is simply structured differently: Scotland runs mid-August to late June, England early September to late July. Both deliver a similar number of teaching days — the terms are just offset by two to three weeks, which is why the summer holidays barely overlap for a fortnight.

Do all Scottish councils use the same dates?

No — all 32 Scottish councils set their own term dates and in-service days, which is why every date on this page is shown as a range. Look up your own council for the exact calendar.
