National 5 Physics: The Paper, the Assignment, and Whether It Is Hard
National 5 Physics from 2027 is a 110-mark paper plus a 20-mark assignment. The 2025 grade boundaries, the pass rate, and the maths that catches people out.

National 5 Physics has a reputation for being one of the harder sciences at this level. The 2025 figures do not really support it: 13,678 candidates sat it, and 87.9% got a grade. The no-award rate of 12.1% is lower than National 5 Maths, National 5 Chemistry and National 5 Biology.
What is true is that it is unforgiving in one particular way, and that way is arithmetic rather than physics.
The two components
This is the course as it stands for pupils sitting the exam from 2027 — course specification version 5.0, valid from session 2026–27:

The 2025 and 2026 diets ran on the previous version: a 135-mark question paper over 2 hours 30 minutes, scaled to 100, plus the same 20-mark assignment scaled to 25, giving a 125-mark total. The 2025 boundaries below are marks out of 125, which matters when you turn them into percentages.
The course is 24 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 5. The assignment is done in class, under supervision for the report stage, and marked externally by SQA.
Note the scaling. The assignment is worth 20 raw marks but counts as 28 (25 until 2026), which makes it about a fifth of the final total. That is a large, controllable block of marks available before the exam diet even starts — and in practice it is where the gap between an A and a B is most often decided, because it is the one part of the course where a pupil can take time, ask questions and revise a draft.

Cumulatively, 72.6% achieved a C or better. Entries were slightly up on 2024 (13,353).
Read those boundaries against the maths ones and the difference in character is obvious: a C in National 5 Physics needs around 45% of the marks (56 out of 125), where a C in National 5 Maths needs just over half. Physics papers are set to be discriminating at the top rather than forgiving at the bottom.
The thing that actually catches people out
The specification lists the skills the course develops, and the ones that lose marks are not the physics knowledge. They are: processing information using calculations and units, presenting information appropriately, and applying knowledge to new situations.
In an exam that means three recurring failure modes, none of which is about understanding physics:
- Units. A correct number in the wrong unit is a wrong answer. Physics at this level is relentless about it, and it is the cheapest mark to lose and the cheapest to fix.
- Rearranging before substituting. Pupils who substitute first and rearrange afterwards make more errors and take longer. It is a habit, and habits are trainable.
- Reading data from a graph or table. A large share of the paper hands you information and asks you to select from it. Practising with real past papers, rather than topic sheets, is what builds that.
None of this needs Higher-level maths — the algebra in National 5 Physics is National 5 algebra. But it needs that algebra to be automatic, which is why pupils who are struggling with National 5 Maths very often present as struggling with physics too.
The assignment is the marks to protect
Twenty raw marks, scaled to 28 from 2027, marked by SQA. It rewards process rather than results: a clear aim, data you actually collected, sensible processing, appropriate presentation, an honest evaluation of what went wrong.
The single most common way to lose marks is treating it as a lab write-up rather than a report — no stated aim, no evaluation, results presented without units or uncertainty. It is also the one piece of the course where a pupil can ask their teacher what a good one looks like, which is worth doing in September rather than in February.
Where it leads
National 5 Physics is the entry point to Higher Physics, which in turn is expected by essentially every Scottish engineering degree and most physics and astrophysics routes — see subject choices for engineering. Schools rarely start a pupil on Higher Physics without the National 5, so the decision that matters is made at option-choice time in S3 or S4, not in S5.
For revision, this is a past-paper subject more than most: the question styles repeat, the data-handling questions repeat, and SQA past papers are free and official.

Less brutal than its reputation, on the numbers. In 2025, 13,678 candidates sat it and 87.9% came away with an award — the no-award rate was 12.1%, notably lower than National 5 Maths at 18.5%. A third got an A. The reason it feels hard is that it is unforgiving in a specific way: nearly every question needs a formula selected, rearranged and applied with the right units, so a pupil who is shaky on National 5 algebra pays for it in physics as well as in maths. The physics itself is rarely the obstacle.
For 2025 the minimum marks were A 84, B 70, C 56 and D 42. Those are marks on a 125-mark total (the question paper scaled to 100 plus the assignment scaled to 25), so a C sits at roughly 45% and an A at about 67% — lower in percentage terms than National 5 Maths, where a C needs just over half. Boundaries are set after marking each year and move with how the paper performed, so read them as the shape rather than a target.
Two components. From the 2027 diet the question paper is 110 marks over 2 hours, sat in the exam diet (until 2026 it was 135 marks over 2 hours 30 minutes, scaled to 100). The assignment is 20 marks, scaled to 28 from 2027 (25 until 2026), completed in class over about 8 hours with a maximum of 1 hour 30 minutes for the write-up stage, and marked externally. The assignment is worth around a fifth of the total once scaled, which makes it the single largest block of marks a pupil can bank before study leave starts.
A research task on a physics topic agreed with your teacher: you gather data from your own practical work and from other sources, process it, present it properly, draw a conclusion and evaluate the method. Around 8 hours in total, of which no more than 1 hour 30 minutes is the report stage under supervision. It is worth 20 marks, scaled to 28 from the 2027 diet, and it is marked by SQA, not the school. Because it is done in class with support available, it is the most controllable marks on the course — and the ones most often left to chance.
Effectively yes, because you need Higher Physics for most Scottish engineering degrees and schools will not normally start a pupil on Higher Physics without the National 5. The same applies to physics, astrophysics and many computing science routes. If National 5 Physics is not on the timetable and engineering is the goal, that is a conversation to have with the school at option-choice time rather than in S5.
