National 5 Maths: The Two Papers, the Grade Boundaries, and Where Marks Go

National 5 Maths is two papers, 90 marks, one without a calculator. The 2025 grade boundaries, the pass rate, and what the non-calculator paper really tests.

National 5 Maths is the qualification most Scottish pupils' next three years hinge on, and it is the one with the widest spread of outcomes in the whole National 5 diet. In 2025, 34,846 candidates sat it. Just under 40% came away with an A. Just under 19% came away with nothing at all.

Both those numbers are true at once, and they are the honest summary of the course: it rewards fluency very well and punishes gaps very hard.

The two papers

There is no coursework, no assignment and no folio. The whole grade comes from two papers sat on the same day:

The course is 24 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 5, with a notional 160 hours of learning — the same weighting as every other National 5.

Paper 1 is the one that decides most grades, and not because it is harder. It is 44% of the marks, it comes first, and it tests the things that cannot be rescued by a calculator: surds, the laws of indices, scientific notation, rounding to significant figures, algebraic manipulation, and the exact-value trigonometry. A pupil who has quietly leaned on a calculator through S3 and S4 meets that fact for the first time in an exam hall.

A pass at C is a little over half marks. That is the single most useful fact for a pupil in the run-up: the exam is not asking for near-perfection, it is asking you to reliably finish the questions you can do. Cumulatively, 69.3% got a C or better.

Boundaries move each year. SQA sets them after marking, once it can see how the papers actually performed, so a paper that ran hard gets slightly lower boundaries. Do not revise to a number — but the pattern has been stable enough for years that "a bit over half for a C, around 70% for an A" is a fair working model.

Where the marks actually go

The specification is explicit about the skills sampled, and they cluster into four blocks: numerical (surds, indices, scientific notation, rounding), algebraic, geometric and trigonometric, and statistical. The examiner's phrasing is worth reading as a pupil rather than a teacher: the course asks you to "select and apply" skills and to "select a strategy to solve a problem".

That word select is where marks are lost. Most National 5 questions do not tell you which method to use. A pupil who knows six techniques but cannot tell which one a question is asking for will lose marks on questions they could have done — and that is a revision problem with a specific fix: past papers by question type rather than by topic, so the practice includes choosing.

The honest read on the no-award rate

18.5% is high, and it is worth being clear about what it usually is not. It is rarely a pupil who could not understand the material. It is far more often one of two things: a pupil presented for National 5 who was still consolidating National 4, or a pupil whose algebra never became automatic and who therefore ran out of time rather than out of knowledge.

Both are visible long before May. A prelim that comes back with unfinished papers rather than wrong answers is a fluency problem, and fluency responds to volume — which is what makes past papers the highest-value revision for this subject specifically. If you are choosing subjects

National 5 Maths is effectively compulsory in most Scottish schools and is a stated entry requirement for a large share of college and university courses, so the real choice is usually not whether but which — Mathematics or Applications of Mathematics. Mathematics is the one that leads to Higher Maths and is expected by science, engineering, computing, economics and medicine routes. Frequently asked questions

It is the hardest of the big National 5 subjects to fail-proof, and the numbers show it. In 2025, 34,846 candidates sat it and 18.5% came away with no award — roughly one in five, which is a higher no-award rate than National 5 Physics, Chemistry or Biology. But the top end is generous: 39.6% got an A, the largest A share of any of the core sciences and maths at this level. So it splits. Pupils who are fluent with algebra find it very passable; pupils who are still shaky on National 4 algebra find it punishing, because almost every topic is built on rearranging something.
