How Assessment Works
National 5 Spanish is assessed across 4 components, totalling 120 marks.
Question Paper 1 — Reading and Writing
ExamSection 1 Reading (30 marks): texts in Spanish, questions and answers in English, including 10 marks for an overall-purpose question. Section 2 Writing (20 marks, scaled to 15): a job application email in Spanish.
Question Paper 2 — Listening
ExamA monologue worth 8 marks then a conversation worth 12 marks, linked thematically. Scaled to 30 marks, so listening carries more weight in the final grade than its raw mark suggests.
Assignment — Writing
CourseworkA piece of writing in Spanish produced under supervision and submitted to Qualifications Scotland for external marking.
Performance — Talking
PerformancePresentation (10 marks, about 1–2 minutes) then conversation (20 marks, about 5–6 minutes) — 15 marks for the conversation itself and 5 for sustaining it. No automatic penalty applies to performances falling outside the suggested timings.
Grade boundaries, 2026 and before
The minimum mark for each grade, as published by Qualifications Scotland after each diet. The notional design points are 70% for an A, 60% for a B, 50% for a C (the pass) and 40% for a D, and the actual lines are moved after marking so a grade means the same whether the paper ran hard or easy — which is why the C sits where it does below rather than at exactly half marks.

Important Assessment Notes
Talking / Speaking Performance
National 5 Spanish includes an internally assessed talking or speaking performance. This component is conducted with your teacher and contributes to your overall grade. Preparation and regular practice with your teacher is essential.
Listening Paper
National 5 Spanish includes a separate listening paper, which is sat under exam conditions. Audio passages are played and you answer questions in English. No dictionary is permitted in the listening paper.
Assignment Note
Two of the five components are produced in school rather than in the exam hall — the writing assignment and the talking performance — and together they are 45 of the 120 scaled marks.
After National 5 Spanish
Most pupils who achieve a grade C or above in National 5 Spanish progress to Higher Spanish in S5. Higher Spanish.

Editor’s note
The scaling is the thing to understand: Writing is marked out of 20 but scaled down to 15, while Listening is marked out of 20 and scaled UP to 30. So listening is worth twice what its raw mark implies, and it is the component pupils practise least. The talking performance is 30 marks — a quarter of the course — and it is done in front of your own teacher, not an examiner.
