How Assessment Works
National 5 Music is assessed across 3 components, totalling 100 marks.
Question Paper
ExamA listening paper testing music concepts, styles, and notation. 35% of the overall course award once scaled.
Assignment (Composing)
CourseworkComposing music (20 marks) plus a composing review (10 marks). The composition runs between 1 minute and 2 minutes 30 seconds. 15% of the overall course award. An arrangement, a TAB-only submission, or a piece that is solely improvisation is awarded 0 marks.
Performance (two instruments)
Performance30 marks on each of two contrasting instruments, 50% of the overall course award. The programme must be a minimum of 8 minutes and must not exceed 8 minutes 30 seconds.
Grade boundaries, 2026 and before
The minimum mark for each grade, as published by Qualifications Scotland after each diet. The notional design points are 70% for an A, 60% for a B, 50% for a C (the pass) and 40% for a D, and the actual lines are moved after marking so a grade means the same whether the paper ran hard or easy — which is why the C sits where it does below rather than at exactly half marks.

Important Assessment Notes
Listening Paper
National 5 Music includes a separate listening paper, which is sat under exam conditions. Audio passages are played and you answer questions in English. No dictionary is permitted in the listening paper.
Practical / Lab Component
National 5 Music includes a practical or laboratory component as part of the coursework assessment. This may involve carrying out experiments, writing up practical reports, or completing hands-on tasks under teacher supervision.
Assignment Note
The composing assignment carries strict format rules and several automatic zeros — an arrangement, a TAB-only submission or a pure improvisation all score nothing. Read the marking instructions before starting, not after.
After National 5 Music
Most pupils who achieve a grade C or above in National 5 Music progress to Higher Music in S5. Higher Music.

Half the grade is the performance and the exam is only 45 minutes — the shortest National 5 question paper on this site. The marks are scaled, so the raw totals (40 + 30 + 60 = 130) are not the course total: scaled, it is 35 + 15 + 50 = 100. The two-instrument requirement is the part pupils underestimate; a second instrument at the required standard takes more than one year to build.
