Who Needs Advanced Higher Computing Science?

How hard is the jump from Higher?
Higher Computing Science assesses whether you can program. Advanced Higher assesses whether you can run a project: analyse an open problem, design a solution before writing it, test it systematically and evaluate it honestly. The step is in the process, not the syntax — candidates who start coding in week one and document afterwards consistently lose marks in analysis and design.

The 80-mark project is the majority of the grade and its marks are weighted towards implementation (30) and design (20). Analysis is 10 and evaluation only 5 — a beautifully written evaluation cannot rescue a thin build.

Editor’s note
The project is 60% and its mark scheme rewards work done before any code is written — 30 of the 80 marks are analysis and design. Choose a problem with a genuinely uncertain solution rather than one you already know how to build, and keep the testing evidence as you go; reconstructing a test plan in April is where the 15 testing marks are usually lost.
