Who Needs Advanced Higher Business Management?

How hard is the jump from Higher?
Higher Business Management asks you to describe and apply. Advanced Higher asks you to evaluate — strategic planning, competing schools of management thought, and the effectiveness of approaches to change. The stimulus-image format in Section 1 is the practical shift: you are reading an unseen business situation and bringing course theory to it, rather than reproducing prepared material.
How Assessment Works
Advanced Higher Business Management is assessed across 2 components. Total: 120 marks.
Question Paper
ExamSection 1 (40 marks) has mandatory questions based on stimulus images, each worth 4–8 marks. Section 2 (40 marks) has at least four mandatory questions, each part worth 4–10 marks. Both draw from across the course. 67% of the overall marks.
Project
Coursework33% of the overall marks. Marked as introduction (5), analysis and evaluation (20), conclusions and recommendations (8), research (3) and structure and referencing (4). Submitted to Qualifications Scotland for external marking.

The project mark scheme is published in parts, and half of it sits outside the analysis: 3 marks for research and 4 for structure and referencing. Those 7 marks are the easiest in the course to secure and the easiest to throw away.

Editor’s note
Section 1 being stimulus-based makes past papers less repeatable than in most subjects — the theory recurs but the scenarios do not. Practise applying the same framework to unfamiliar businesses. The project is 33% and its referencing marks are free if you set up a citation habit in September.
