What You Study

National 5 Geography is organised into 3 course areas.

Physical Environments

  • Weather: UK air masses, depressions, anticyclones, weather mapping
  • Landscape types (your school chooses from): glaciated upland, coastal landscapes, upland limestone, rivers and valleys
  • Land use and conflicts in physical environments

Human Environments

  • Contrasts in development (developed vs developing world indicators)
  • World population (distribution, change, migration)
  • Urban issues in developed and developing countries
  • Rural land use and change

Global Issues

  • Two topics chosen from: climate change, natural regions (rainforest or tundra), environmental hazards (earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical storms), trade and globalisation, tourism, health

A geographical study (fieldwork or desk-based research). Schools manage the timing — it is not a single timed exam-condition sit like History or Modern Studies.

After National 5 Geography

Most pupils who achieve a grade C or above in National 5 Geography progress to Higher Geography in S5. Higher Geography or Higher Environmental Science.
