Digital and Tech Apprenticeships in Scotland 2026

Scotland's digital apprenticeship sector is growing fast with a shortage of qualified talent. This guide covers all routes from Foundation through to Graduate Apprenticeship, typical salaries, and the key employers hiring in 2026.

Scotland has a well-documented shortage of digital and technology talent, and the apprenticeship route is increasingly central to how employers are addressing it. From Foundation Apprenticeships in schools through to Masters-level Graduate Apprenticeships, the digital route offers school leavers and career changers alike a way into one of the most in-demand and well-paid sectors in the Scottish economy — without the cost of a traditional degree.

The Digital Skills Gap in Scotland

Skills Development Scotland data for 2024–25 shows that 47.8% of all new Modern Apprenticeship starts are in STEM occupational areas, with digital and technology among the fastest-growing subsectors. Nationally, employers consistently report difficulty hiring enough qualified digital workers. That creates a genuinely favourable market for apprentices: strong demand, competitive salaries even at entry level, and clear progression pathways into roles commanding salaries well above average Scottish earnings.

Foundation Apprenticeships in Digital

Foundation Apprenticeships (FAs) in the digital sphere are available to S5 and S6 pupils across two frameworks:

Creative and Digital Media covers graphic design, web content, video production, and digital communication. It is delivered one day a week at college and leads to an SCQF Level 6 qualification. It suits students who blend creative and technical interests.

IT: Software Development at SCQF Level 6 introduces programming concepts, application development, and problem-solving. It is the most direct school-based route into a software career and is available through a growing number of local authority partnerships with colleges.

Both FAs are arranged through your school's guidance and curriculum team. Express interest in S4 — availability depends on local college capacity and employer engagement.

Modern Apprenticeships in Digital

Modern Apprenticeships in the digital sector are full-time employed positions at SCQF Levels 6 and 7. The main frameworks are:

Digital Technology (SCQF Level 6) covers IT infrastructure, networking, digital support, cloud services, and IT service management. It typically runs for 2–3 years and is suitable for school leavers with National 5-level qualifications. It is the broadest entry point into the sector.

IT: Software Development (SCQF Level 7) is more technically focused, covering programming languages (commonly Python, Java, JavaScript, C#), software engineering practices, version control, testing, and agile methodologies. It typically runs for 2–3 years. Some employers use this framework for junior developer roles from day one.

Pay for MA-level digital roles is entirely market-driven — unlike engineering or construction, there is no Joint Industry Board equivalent setting minimum rates. In practice, Modern Apprenticeship-level digital roles in Scotland typically start at £18,000–£22,000 per year (approximately £8.65–£10.58/hr for a 40-hour week). This is above the statutory minimum and reflects the supply-demand imbalance in the sector.

Graduate Apprenticeships in Digital

Graduate Apprenticeships (GAs) are the flagship route for those wanting degree-level qualifications while working full-time in a tech role. Scotland currently offers the following digital GA frameworks:

IT: Software Development (SCQF Level 9 to 11) — this is the most popular digital GA and leads to a BSc or MEng in computing or software engineering at a partner university. Duration is typically 3–4 years for the BSc and 4–5 years for the MEng.

IT Management for Business (SCQF Level 9) — combines technical IT with business analysis, project management, and enterprise architecture. Suits those interested in digital leadership roles rather than pure development.

Cyber Security (SCQF Level 10–11) — available at both BEng Hons (bachelor's, Edinburgh Napier) and MSc (master's) level, making it one of the more flexible GA frameworks. One of the fastest-growing in terms of employer demand. Advanced entry — employers typically look for candidates with strong academic qualifications or prior IT experience.

Data Science (SCQF Level 11) — a Masters-level qualification combining statistics, machine learning, data engineering, and business intelligence. Employers across financial services, healthcare, and government are actively recruiting through this framework.

Multiple Scottish universities deliver digital Graduate Apprenticeships. Geographic options are good — from Aberdeen (Robert Gordon University) to Dundee (University of Dundee) to Edinburgh and Glasgow (Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh Napier, Glasgow Caledonian, Strathclyde). Check apprenticeships.scot for the current list of approved framework-university pairings, as delivery can change annually.

Pay at GA level is substantially higher. Large employers typically pay £25,000–£30,000 per year or more for Graduate Apprentices in digital roles. Financial services firms running digital GAs (JP Morgan, Barclays, Standard Life) tend to pay at the higher end.

Key Employers in Scotland's Digital Sector

Scottish Government Digital (based in Edinburgh's St Andrew's House and Victoria Quay) is one of the largest public sector digital employers in Scotland. It recruits digital apprentices at both MA and GA level across software development, data, and digital transformation roles.

NHS Digital Scotland — NHS National Services Scotland and individual health boards run digital apprenticeship programmes to support everything from electronic patient record development to cybersecurity and clinical informatics. NHS digital roles often include Agenda for Change pay structures after qualification.

JP Morgan's Glasgow campus is one of the bank's largest technology centres globally, employing thousands of software engineers, data scientists, and IT professionals. JP Morgan recruits digital GA apprentices in Glasgow with competitive starting salaries.

Barclays has a significant technology presence in Glasgow (its Radbroke technology centre operations have expanded in Scotland). Barclays is a Living Wage Accredited employer and recruits technology apprentices at both MA and GA levels.

Amazon has fulfilment and data centre operations across Scotland, alongside a growing cloud (AWS) professional community. AWS and Amazon corporate teams recruit digital apprentices, particularly for cloud operations and IT support roles.

Tech SMEs represent a substantial share of Scotland's digital job market. Companies in the Edinburgh and Glasgow tech clusters, as well as firms in Dundee's games industry (Rockstar North, Outplay Entertainment) and Aberdeen's energy tech sector, regularly post MA-level vacancies. These can offer faster progression and broader responsibilities than large-corporate programmes.

How to Find Digital Apprenticeship Vacancies in Scotland

apprenticeships.scot is the starting point — filter by sector (Digital and IT) and location. Set up email alerts. The majority of MA-level vacancies are posted January to June; GA vacancies follow an October to April cycle.

For large employers, check careers pages directly:

  • myjobscotland.gov.uk for Scottish Government and local authority digital roles
  • jobs.nhs.scot for NHS digital apprenticeships
  • Employer careers pages (JP Morgan, Barclays, Amazon) alongside apprenticeships.scot

Networking events organised by CodeClan (Scotland's digital skills academy), TechFest, and Scottish Tech Army can also surface informal apprenticeship opportunities with smaller employers.
